A bit About Me

With his finger on the pulse of technology and consumer electronics, Jon Cohen has been breaking, fixing and enjoying technology since childhood. His father often recounts the story of how Jon loved to unplug and replug RCA cables from the back of the TV as a toddler. These days Jon contributes as a tech journalist and correspondent to SiriusXM and Rogers Media, and as a photographer. Jon uses his years of knowledge working in consumer electronics to write and inspire his β€œWhat the Tech?” column.

Amazon Echo Dot Kids, a cute and fun add on for a child's room

Amazon Echo Dot Kids, a cute and fun add on for a child's room

The Amazon Echo Dot Kids edition is a friendly looking version of the ever so popular Echo Dot from Amazon. In the Kids edition Amazon has made it easy for kids and parents to get a lot of functionality and versatility from a voice assistant.

Featuring a kid friend design (the owl in the version), the Echo Dot Kids edition has a bit different feature set than a standard Echo Dot. With this version it includes a 1 year subscription to Amazon kids+ (plus) and this subscription provides users over 1000 hours of content. The content is rich and engaging and features popular children's characters from the world of Barbie, Marvel and Disney. As well as enriched content from sources like National Geographic Kids and Audible Kids.

The Echo Dot Kids is build strong and does not feel at all like a kids toy. The buttons on the top allow the user to control the volume up and down. The Echo Dot Kids edition also has a dedicated button for the microphone. This button makes it easy to mute or unmute the mic.

Of course because this product is aimed at kids 3-12 years old, Amazon has also offered parental controls that give a good level of granular access. You as a parent can control the levels of access your child will have to Amazon's content.

As with all smart home devices the Echo Dot Kids edition need to be connected to the internet via wifi and will require you to setup the device using the Alexa app on your phone or tablet. Also parents will need to have at minimum an account setup with Amazon to get this product going.

Final thought, wether you have been looking for a way to introduce your child to the world of smart home technology or if you already have a smart home device and you see your child is engaging in chatting with it the Echo Dot Kids edition would offer more content that is kid centric and give you as a parent more controls.
